Female storytellers abound at the Orlando Fringe Festival, and Tami Evans ranks among the finest.
In “Off the Rails” (Green venue, 60 minutes, highly recommended), Evans uses a fateful night with a vibrant friend to look at what happens when life doesn’t go according to plan.
“Have you ever had a friend who makes your life better but a little worse at the same time?” she asks before launching into the tale of a harrowing late-night journey home on the New York City subway — with detours into how she accidentally became a barber, why her school production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” was particularly memorable and other anecdotes comical and emotional.
As directed by Steve Berglund, Evans knows how to build a story to a satisfying conclusion and has a way with details to quickly depict a time frame — a Samsung flip phone, Nancy Reagan.
“Off the Rails” is a highly engaging show with a performer who makes the audience feel like her friends.
