What Motivates Us Most?

Do you want to help yourself and those around you Live Lighter?

As a Motivational Speaker helping organizations increase productivity, connection, and performance, I often ask audiences, “What is the #1 motivator in the workplace?”

Instantly, I hear voices shout, “MONEY!” – the answer I most often get. (Though occasionally I hear, “PIZZA!”)

The truth is, money is not something many organizations can use as a regular motivational tool. The good news? Research shows ‘appreciation’ actually tops that list. People want to be acknowledged for their successes and their efforts, even in the face of failure.

What Does Appreciation Look Like?

Here are four steps you can use to show appreciation in ways that motivate others, whether in a professional organization, your social circle, or your family.

1. Search

Single out one person and focus on a specific description of what they are doing to positively impact the team, the project, or the gathering.

For example, let’s say “Alex” has been exploring positive workplace culture trends of the highest-rated companies to share at monthly management meetings.

2. Learn

What exactly is this person doing that makes a difference?

In Alex’s case, they take 15 minutes every morning to find companies with the highest retention rates, research what makes those workplaces outstanding, and choose one or two ideas to share at the meeting.

3. Celebrate

This is the magic step. Let the person know exactly how their initiative is making a positive impact.

This is especially powerful when shared publicly. It not only enhances appreciation for the individual but also inspires others to take similar initiative.

4. Thank

Simply and sincerely say thank you.

Putting It All Together

Here’s how the conversation might look:

“(1) Hey Alex, can we chat for a moment about the positive workplace research you’ve been doing?

(2) The way you identify these outstanding environments and bring ideas back to our team has allowed us to implement some really effective new initiatives.

(3) The impact is clear. Our most recent survey results show a 30% increase in employee satisfaction, with most people listing your initiatives as some of the best elements of our workplace. Another impact is that more people attend the monthly meetings because they’re excited to learn about your findings.

(4) Thank you for the care you’re taking to help keep our organization on the cutting edge of positive trends!”

This conversation takes just minutes, costs nothing, and is one of the single most effective ways to increase engagement, optimism, and happiness.

The ROI of Gratitude

An efficient and effective way to Live Lighter is to make a positive investment in those around you. Whether you’re working toward a team deadline or organizing the school Bunco fundraiser, appreciating those who are sharing the experience with you is the best return on your investment of time, energy, and resources.

Quite simply, you can always Bank on Thanks!

Love and light,

Tami
